Lifting and Rigging Research

2DM Associates president David Duerr, P.E. (ret.) has been engaged in the performance of independent research aimed at improving the design and use of lifting-related structures and equipment. Areas of interest include:

• Development of standards for and design of Below-the-Hook Lifting Devices.
• Design and analysis of Crane Mats.
• Lift planning, engineering, and development of standards for Hydraulic Gantry Systems.

Products of this research and study include two books (Telescopic Hydraulic Gantry Systems and Mobile Crane Support Handbook) and numerous papers published in professional journals and construction industry periodicals.

Another practical application of this work is found in Mr. Duerr's service on committees that write guides and standards for the construction industry. This service includes membership on the ASME B30.1 Subcommittee (Jacks, Industrial Rollers, Air Casters, and Hydraulic Gantries), the B30.20 Subcommittee (Below-the-Hook Lifting Devices), the ASME BTH Standards Committee, Design of Below-the-Hook Lifting Devices (chair from 2006 to 2012 and vice chair from 2012 to 2018), membership on the original SC&RA Hydraulic Jacking Systems Task Force (1994 - 1996) and on the SC&RA Telescopic Hydraulic Gantry Task Force (2004), and participation in the North American Matting Association.
